Vientiane is the sleepy capital of Laos. Not quite on the top 10 list of tourist destinations in Asia it nevertheless has its own attractions. One of which is most assuredly that the slow pace becomes infectious and life begins to meander like the Mekong River through the city. Here’s a simple map of a few of the key landmarks in town to help you get your bearings.
Vientiane doesn’t encourage one to invest too heavily in gratuitous expenditure of energy. But if you really must do something then I suggest a long walk along the Mekong River in a westerly direction. There are plenty of bars that way in case you weaken. And if you go far enough you’ll find interesting little communities that don’t see many travellers. You’ll also see some very nice teak mansions and villas along the way too.
