Here are the unfinished works of the Beings. Here are the stones which the Giant played and threw away
said the Vietnamese poet Ngô Xuân Diệu.
The poet rescues us poor tourists from bland hyperbole. When ‘the most amazing’ does nothing to evoke the feeling of a cold, misty morning on Ha Long Bay. The sun struggles to make a difference on a winter’s morning but all it can do is show us a hint of the stony residents of the bay. Despite the multitude of boats that tour each day, we find a quiet spot. Just the sounds of sea birds for company in the early morning, fellow passengers still asleep.
