Visiting The Peak must be one of the top tourist activities in Hong Kong, with most visitors taking the Peak Tram up the steep slopes of Mount Victoria. Here’s a quick guide for new visitors on how to get from Central MTR to the tram terminus.
The MTR is a fast and convenient way to get around much of Hong Kong. Grab an Octopus Card before you start your explorations. This card, available at MTR stations and 7-Eleven stores, can be used on the MTR, Star Ferry, Buses and Trams across Hong Kong. It can also be used on the Peak Tram and in stores and shops such as McDonalds. $HKD 150 for a standard card includes a refundable deposit of $HKD 50 and $HKD 100 of stored value. When you get to the Peak Tram you’ll often find the queue for tickets to be quite long. Octopus Card holders can skip the line - reason enough to get one.
Make your way to Central, the MTR station that’s the starting point for our 10-15 minute walk to the tram. Like many MTR stations, Central has many different exits. We’re after exit ‘J2’ which is well sign-posted but about 100m walk after you exit the ticket barrier.
Each of the exit signs describes the typical destinations at that exit, so you’ll see that exit ‘J’ heads to the tram terminus. When planning a trip on the MTR it’s useful to work out not just which station to go to but also which exit you want. Google Maps for Hong Kong has the exits marked which makes this easier.
At the top of the stairs as you exit you’ll be under a covered walkway and there’ll be a sign overhead showing you which direction to go in. It’s an easy walk, straight forward. Following this sign to the right and you’re on your way.
Walk across the square to the crossing at Tim Mei Rd and then the next crossing of Garden Road which then leads to our destination. You’ll see a pink and blue sign on the road barrier that points the way.
Garden Road starts up the hill, past St. John’s Cathedral, across a side street and up to a set of traffic lights. Look to your left and you’ll see your destination. Not far now.
The tram terminus itself isn’t immediately obvious and as this is written there is some construction around the site.
You’ve arrived. You’ll see the ticket line and the shortcut for Octopus Card holders. Now you just need to wait for your tram to arrive.
The Peak Tram departs every 10-15 minutes and costs $HKD 22 one way or $HKD 33 return.
Enjoy your 7 minute ride to the top!
